Today in my research methods lab we were discussing our collaborative project. Someone mentioned how they were going to study the effects of coffee consumption on stress. I pointed out that some people don't drink coffee. The student scoffed and said, "Okay, whatever, I'll just do caffeine." I said, "I don't really drink caffeine, if you're referring to tea or soft drinks. A lot of people don't." They didn't believe me. I thought it was funny, and also pathetic, that they refuse to believe someone would simply choose not to drink that shit. Everyone laughed and someone was like, "Then what DO you drink?" I said, "Water..." Not really sure why that's so strange, but I definitely shouldn't be in the minority on this.
This one girl in the lab comes to class when it's snowing wearing shorts and it pisses me off. Her justification is that she ran that morning. OKAY?? Well your run is over, bitch, and EVERYONE ELSE is running with actual pants on. She does this thing when she talks where she waves her hands back and forth in the air rapidly while shaking her head, and her voice trails off to silence. The reason this irritates me is because she always injects her fucking thoughts into everything, then just waves her hands, shakes her head, then trails off. So we're like, "What was that?" and she goes, "Oh nevermind." IF IT WAS "NEVERMIND" THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP BITCH.
My research focus is (this will surprise you) the effects of humor on the ability of college students to cope with challenges. The results thus far show that students who categorically rank as "high humor" predict similar performance levels as "low humor" students, but rate the potential challenges as more positive. In the event that their performance is much lower than anticipated, "high humor" students are much less likely to have their self-esteem negatively affected. They tend to distance themselves as individuals from the results of their behaviors, in the sense that they do not find poor performance to necessarily be a reflection of a personal flaw but rather a series of outside factors or influences of circumstance.
ANOTHER surprise: my secondary research interest is psychosexual behavior! At this level of study, however, it's discouraged due to its controversial nature. I think I will focus on humor in 305 and move toward the psychosexual in 306.
I am doing a study at the UVA hospital that involves five outpatient and two inpatient visits and pays $300. I have been against taking artificial hormones since I knew what they were, but for $300 dude you can inject me with vampire blood.
I got 1.5 hours of sleep last night. I'm pretty tired but I can't sleep... Tiiiired.
