I used to read constantly and now I never do. Interestingly enough, I was masturbating in my living room when I noticed Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents sitting snug on my bookshelf between a cookbook and a textbook. I finished masturbating then read it.
I never thought I would like Freud. I don't know why. I don't know why I own a book by a man I thought I wouldn't like. Perhaps it's all of his nonsense about the Oedipus complex and the flat out idiotic misogyny behind the theory of penis envy, and perhaps some deviant part of me appreciates that. However, once again I demonstrate my own prejudice as I am enthralled by his thoughts. I still think he's a hack, as Karl Popper pointed out the most controversial of his theories can neither be supported nor rejected. If an individual admits to having repressed memories then they essentially have rejected the concept that their memories are repressed at all, nullifying the claim. If an individual claims not to have repressed memories, well, that's because they're repressed! How fun.
However, I still enjoyed reading the book, and even a busted ass hack is right twice a life. I realized that I miss reading, quite a bit, and I decided to go buy some books. Freud wrote a bit about his "death drive" theory, or the attempt of the human mind to balance out the pleasure principle. He believed that, not only do humans consistently pursue that which will provide them pleasure, but they also choose to repeat traumatic or painful events as a contrast. Toward this end he views man's perpetual satisfaction of pleasure through suicide. This is mentioned in Civilization and Its Discontents, however I'd like to read more about it. I don't know where to start. To me it seems to be a great contradiction in terms, like taking pleasure from terror, but that's because I haven't read more.
I'm also going to buy a few zombie books and some fiction and non-fiction texts about psychosexual behaviors. Okay, one of them is basically a porn novel. I can be trashy sometimes too dudes.
I mean, fuck, I wouldn't have even gotten back on this kick if it weren't for masturbation.
